Pets on My Travels

As much as I love to travel and visit my family and friends, I always miss my two doggies Dot and Lia. Fortunately, there are pets at many of the places I visit. Here are a few pictures of the pets I spent time with while in Canada in September.

And there are many cats as well. This is Earl Grey. The coolest cat ever and I love his name.
We can’t forget the goats. Did I mention my granddaughter loves animals? I didn’t get pictures of all of them either.

Cross Canada Scenery

Canada in the fall is gorgeous with such a variety of landscapes. I started my recent trip on the east coast, in Prince Edward Island, travelled to British Columbia on the west coast, and ended my journey in Alberta, one of the prairie provinces. I want to share with you some of the fabulous scenery I encountered.
I was only in three of the ten provinces of Canada, but you can get an idea of the diversity in the landscape from one coast to another.
So Much To Be Thankful For

The second Monday in October is Canadian Thanksgiving, typically a time for family. Although I’m thankful every day, this is an opportunity to reflect on the many blessings that I have in my life. Since I just returned from a fabulous visit to Canada, I am especially thankful for my many friends and family. I thought I would share some recent family moments with you in honour of Thanksgiving.

Spending time with my daughter on her island in BC is always special.
Spending time in Alberta with my son and his amazing family is always fun!
And then there are the many cousins I was delighted to see, as well as a dear aunt and uncle
Yes, I am blessed with many cousins and these are just a few of them.
I am so happy and thankful to have a huge, loving and supportive family.

Horsehair Pottery

During a visit to Sedona, Arizona, a few years ago, my daughter and I were intrigued by the horsehair pottery we saw in the wonderful shops there. My potter daughter decided to create some of this pottery herself while I was visiting her last fall. I was privileged to watch this fascinating process. The four pieces turned out well. Here are some pictures of her creating horsehair pottery.
Horsehair pottery is pottery that incorporates hair from the manes and tails of horses into its design. The process of creating horsehair pottery involves applying strands of hair to the surface of a hot clay pot that has just been removed from the kiln. The hair carbonizes, leaving random patterns in the pot’s surface. Horsehair makes great patterns because of its coarseness and length. Tail hair is thicker, so it leaves bolder patterns, and finer mane hair produces more subtle lines.
Every pot created using this pottery technique is unique. Many artists add other design features to the horsehair pots they create. Some artists use the same technique with dog or cat hair. For instance, my daughter has used the pet’s hair on urns she has created to hold a dear deceased pet’s ashes.

Mom Time

I have so many wonderful memories of my recent time in Canada including special school visits, Christmas with family, visits with good friends, snuggling with grandpets and fun with grandchildren. But the best memory of all is the valuable time I spent with mom. I saw her 17 days in a row, often more than once a day. We had some good laughs and a few tears as we reminisced. I usually sat with her during her meals, attended singalongs and quiz events with her, read to her and we looked at pictures together. We celebrated her 90th birthday by holding a party at the seniors home a couple of days before the actual birthday (which is Christmas day!) 48 friends and family came to wish her a Happy Birthday. She was so pleased, even though it was a bit overwhelming at times. I’d like to share a few mom pictures.

You can see she loves her teddy bears and was given quite a few for gifts. Many of them she won at Bingo!
On her actual birthday, on Christmas day, the staff decorated her place in the dining room with balloons and streamers, sang to her and presented her with a cupcake and candle for her to blow out. She was made to feel very special. The staff at Valleyview Seniors Care are incredible. I am so grateful.
Mom was showered with love. She is wheelchair bound, her hearing is failing, the words don’t always come out right and she is often confused, but she is happy and so well cared for. The more time I spent with her, the more alert she became. Her long term memory is very good. She remembers names of people I have forgotten.
It was time well spent and I am so glad I was able to be there for her 90th birthday!
Grateful For Awesome Friends

I was fortunate to see many of my awesome friends when I was in Canada. Some gave me a place to stay, some drove me around and everyone fed me so well. They have all been such huge supporters in whatever I do. Here are a few of them.
It was great that these good friends from Trinidad were in Canada at the same time.

Travel writer/photographer friend who took my profile picture and designed my bookmarks. Treated me to a lovely lunch overlooking a golf course.
A supportive writer friend who treated me to a lovely picnic and a Monet exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
A former coworker and her daughter who came to a book signing
My longtime friend who provides me with a comfy place to stay in Medicine Hat, a garden to relax in and delicious meals
As you can see I was well looked after. It was so wonderful to be able to spend time with these friends and many others. I am truly blessed.

Launching, Lunching and Liaising

I will be away from blogging for a while as I am off to Canada to launch Amanda in New Mexico, do presentations and book signings in Vancouver, Delta, Calgary and Medicine Hat, visit with family and friends and stock up on Tim Hortons!! I’ll miss my blogging community but will check in from time to time.
Thanks so much to all of you who read my blog, like it, comment and share it. Time is limited and there are many great blogs out there to read, so I feel honoured that you take the time to read mine. I am so lucky to have such an awesome following.
