Thursday Doors: The Isle of Arran

Posted on: September 11, 2025

Here are some interesting doors I found during my recent stay on the wonderful Isle of Arran, Scotland.

We stopped in to see this artist’s studio, which is attached to her house.

Aren’t those doors amazing?

We had lunch at The Blackwaterfoot Hotel with fabulous views of the water.

A walk took me past this gate leading into someone’s yard.

I stopped for a drink at the Coffee Pot.

The view from The Coffee Pot

I relaxed and enjoyed a lovely latte, and left bookmarks for the staff.

The Shurig, a local pub and eatery, where we met up with some Arran writers and friends for dinner one evening.

The entrance to the Shurig, in the Eden Lodge building, dating back to 1903.

The inside of the restaurant at Eas-Mor. The woodwork and art represent the four seasons, and are amazing, created by a local craftsman.

Door made from a larch that came down in Storm Éowyn.

Look who was waiting for us when we got home!

I love those arched doorways! This is such an aesthetically pleasing place to visit.

It really is. Thanks, Violet.

Very nice pictures, Darlene. I especially like the larch door.

That larch door is amazing.

Great photos, Darlene! What a picturesque place!

It is almost magical. Thanks, Dave.

Gorgeous photos!

Wonderful doors and excellent photos Darlene.

I love the large artist studio doors and the wood door from the fallen tree. Superb.

A great photo of who was waiting for your when you got home…adorable! Great share.

Thanks, Suzette!! I think every artist would love those studio doors. And isn’t that adorable of Dusk looking though the cat door. I love that too.

Yes to the beautiful studio doors. And Dusk is so cute…!

Old doors–even that larch one–are so much better than new ones.

I agree. But, the funny thing is that the larch door is very new. Handcrafted is always best. Also a great way to recycle a tree that had been blown down. It lives on in that door!

Oh! I’m glad you told me. Nicely crafted. And a good memorial to the tree.

Always terrific photos! I love them

Thanks, John. I always find great doors on Arran.

Photos of a lovely visit, Darlene. I love the doors at the artist studio-clear favorite, but the other photos are beautiful. The scenery is amazing.

Thanks, Dan. So pleased you liked these doors. I agree, those studio doors are fabulous!

Great photos – especially the wooden door.

Thanks, Esther. I love heavy wooden doors.

What beautiful doorways and photographs! I enjoyed every single one.

So pleased you enjoyed these photographs, Anne. xo

I love the larch door! And that elegant metal gate. Actually, all these photos are great.

Hard to pick a favourite. Glad you liked them, Audrey.

You’re right! The barn doors are amazing. What an incredible place Arran is.

It really is. Wait till you see the hike to the falls coming up soon.

Darlene, these doors are beautiful — and they make me think about why we are so drawn to them. A door is never just a piece of wood or stone; it’s a threshold, a promise of what lies beyond. Doors speak of transition and new beginnings, of adventures waiting to be discovered. Your photos from Arran capture that sense of mystery and invitation so well.

There is certainly something about doors. Passing through a door can change your life. Imagine the artist envisioning her studio behind those fabulous old doors when she first viewed the place. She only recently moved into the premises and looked so at home.

What a wonderful time you had!!!

Lovely doors, Darlene. Scotland is a magical place.

It really is, John. Every time I go there, it seems more magical.

These are all great doors. I could see the history in the buildings too!

So much history and many stories I’m sure!

What great doors, Darlene. I loved the Shurig building. Is that gothic? It looks like the perfect setting for Halloween. I love the idea of leaving bookmarks in different places. 🙂

I’m big on handing out bookmarks. The girls at the coffee shop were delighted to get them. The Shurig building must have many stories attached to it. I must find out more about it. Glad you like this collection of doors.

You have quite a collection. I loved the rough wood ones and the rounded doors at the beginning of the post, too. So much to love on that post, Darlene!

These photos are amazing, Darlene! I love the doors that open into the artist’s studio AND the decor inside the restaurant. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks, Jan. Those big old doors into the artist studio are amazing. The house and grounds are called Ach ‘na Darach, which is Gaelic for “The Field of the Oak Tree” Many houses on the Isle of Arran have a name.

Such beautiful images, Darlene. Thanks for sharing them with us!

I’m pleased you like these pictures, Olga. xo

Wow, all great with some wonderful contrasts, Darlene!
💗

Thanks, Cindy. A good variety!

You’re so very welcome.. Yes, indeed!!!! ❤️

Darlene, this post is such a delight. Though I’ve never there, I imagine your photos have captured the charming essence of the place. I can’t pick a favorite… but yes, those big studio doors are wonderful. Hugs.

So pleased you liked the doors/pictures and got a good feel for the island. It is such a great place to spend a week.

Beautiful, Darlene! I love that larch door – how unique!

Isn’t it something! People are so clever and creative.

I love wooden doors, wide ones, unusual ones, especially ones overlooking the sea! Beautiful, Darlene, and the artwork/woodwork in the restaurant was stunning. I’d go there just to see it. 🙂 A fun post!

There will be more about Eas-Mor soon. The inside of the cafe was the icing on the cake.

An attractive range and I good idea to leave the bookmarks

Thanks, Derrick. They’re easy to carry with me and everyone likes a bookmark. A good way to let folks know about my books.

I love the artist studio doors, and The Coffee Pot looks charming. Fabulous post, Darlene!

Thanks, Lauren. So may interesting and peaceful spots on this island.

Wow, what beautiful photos. I’ve always wanted to visit Scotland (some day). I especially love the large artist doors, and the little face that waited to welcome you home. 🙂

You will love Scotland when you get there. Glad you enjoyed the photos. There will be more.

What fun doors! I especially liked the ones at the artist’s studio.

Thanks, Sheryl. Those are great doors.

The first couple of doors are excellent. Would love to visit that island one day.

I hope you do. You would love it and leave with tons of photographs!

I think you could be right Darlene.

Beautiful set of shots of some of the interesting doors you spotted on your recent trip. I’m such a fan of the arched and rounded doors. Looks like you picked a lovely spot to enjoy lunch.

Thanks, Linda. You would love this island. Some great hikes with amazing views. xo

This was delightful, Darlene. The artist’s studio doors are amazing, and I think Dan Antion would especially love the door made from a larch.

I thought of Dan when I saw the door made from a fallen larch. Those studio doors, in fact the entire place is an artist’s dream.

It really looks like an artist’s dream! I’m not surprised you thought of Dan. 🙂

I love the look of that artist’s studio and the Blackwaterfoot Hotel. Thanks for sharing, Darlene.

Thanks, Stevie. The artist studio is to die for. A dream come true for the artist.

Cool that you left a bookmark for the staff! 💖Thanks for sharing your photos, Darlene.

Thanks, Carol. I always keep a few in my purse for just in case. The girls were delighted with their bookmarks.

Looks wonderful, Darlene

The Isle of Arran is one of my favourite places.
