Thursday Doors: Denia, Spain

Posted on: March 27, 2025

A few years ago, we spent an enjoyable week in the coastal town of Denia, on the Costa Blanca, halfway between Alicante and Valencia. It’s home to a large fishing fleet and ferries to the Balearic Islands. Like all Spanish towns, it has a colourful history and interesting buildings.

There are many outdoor bars and coffee shops where you can relax and enjoy the sunshine. Denia has an average of 325 days of sunshine a year!

A great place to relax and forget your troubles.

We even found a tapas bar that served sushi, run by a Canadian girl!

Like all Spanish towns, there were several churches.

I love blue-domed churches.

The doors of this church are open welcoming people to an evening service.

Another view of that fabulous blue-tiled dome. In the background are the mountains of Montgo

The best thing for me was a medieval castle with more than a thousand years of history, in the middle of the city!

One of the doors to enter the Castle of Denia

The Moorish gateway into the castle, which is open to the public.

A fabulous door I found in the castle.

The door to the museum on the site of the castle.

The castle provides incredible views of the Gulf of Valencia and the surrounding area. It stood as a defence against various invaders and Berber pirate raids over the centuries; and represents the many cultures; Iberians, Romans, Muslims and Christians, that make up this part of Spain.

A close-up of the door to one of the churches.

I love these towns full of history and charm.

What an absolute treat for the eyes first thing this morning. Thank you!

I’m so pleased you liked these photos, Violet!

What a beautiful post and pictures. Thank you, Darlene. 🩷

I’m glad you liked this glimpse of a lovely place, Jane.

Great doors and lovely photos, Darlene. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Great photos of a picturesque town, Darlene! Three-hundred-twenty-five days of sunshine a year? I’ll take it. 🙂

I know, right! I’ll take all the sun shine I can get. I’m pleased you liked the pictures, Dave.

Ohhhh! That Moorish door! Gorgeous! 🥰

I love that they kept the Moorish designs. xo

Beautiful pictures, Darlene. You captured the soul of Spain (beside the Sushi).

Thanks so much!! I did enjoy the juxtaposition of sushi and tapas.

This is a wonderful collection, Darlene. I was keeping track of which one I liked best, and then CASTLE 🙂 Wow! right in the middle of the city. That’s amazing.

I know. We were looking for our accommodations, drove around a corner and there it was – a castle in the middle of town!! (although that would have been cool, the castle was not our hotel)

The doors are varied, some magnificent, Darlene!

Denia, Spain, sounds a lot like Florida, the Sunshine State.

Florida has a huge Spanish influence so I’m not surprised. Southern Alberta gets a lot of sunshine too, even when the temps are sub zero! Glad you liked the doors. xo

I love all these photos! And what a lovely place Denia, Spain is. Hard to pick a favorite, but I love old castles and the photo of the church doors open for service look so inviting. Thanks for sharing!

I’m delighted you love these photos. The castle was quite something.

That locked door is amazing. How beautiful.

I know. It makes you wonder what’s behind it!

Another city to add to my ‘next time we’re in Spain’ list 😊 Maggie

If you drive down the coast from Barcelona, there are a number of interesting places like this one. (0r up from Alicante)

That moorish gate to the castle is wild, Darlene. Great photos and memories!!💕

Thanks, Cindy. Super memories for sure.

It is, of course, cold and wet in Scotland today, where we get about 325 days with rain per year.

As long as the sun shines for 6 certain days in August!! xo

In my memory, it always seems to be sunny when you’re here!

A fabulous post, Darlene. One day I’ll get to Spain. Not this year though. This year it’s Netherlands and Belgium.

Glad you liked the taste of Spain! I hope you make it here one day. Belgium and the Netherlands are great places to visit.

Lovely set of shots. And how fun to meet another fellow Canadian.

That was fun. She had met a Spanish fellow while she was on holidays, had a child with him, then they split up but she decided to stay and open a tapas bar that served sushi! We chatted for quite a while.

Looks like a beautiful place to visit, Darlene 🙂 Love that castle door! Xo

It was great, we had such a wonderful time. I had paella three times!! I love that door too.

Darlene, what a wonderful tour. Honestly, between you and Olga, you have me wanting to move to Spain. Seriously — I even Googled to see if my cats would have to be quarantined. LOL. Although I know that’s only a dream that isn’t possible for me.

Shared on Bluesky. By the way, what is your name there? I tried to follow, but didn’t find you. Hugs.

Thanks so much! My BlueSky handle is
@darlenefoster.bsky.social I keep forgetting to tell people about it. It’s always fun to dream. All cute kitties are welcome here. Just don’t tell my dogs. xo

I love vacationing with you while I’m in my chair, Darlene. Splendid photos. What a fun time you must have had.

Thanks, Colleen. You can come armchair travelling with me any time! We had a great time. I spent hours at the castle.

I would have loved the castle. 🏰

That’s a pretty solid looking castle, Darlene. I always fancied having a look at Calpe and Denia xx

We love that area, Altea, Calpe and Denia, I think you would as well.

What a beautiful place. I love all your photos Darlene. Three of dad’s siblings and their families live in Barcelona.😍

Thanks, Arlene. The Mediterranean coast of Spain is so beautiful. We are lucky to live here with so many great places nearby.

I love the photos–and, oh, that sun!!

Thanks, Liz. We are lucky to have so much sun!

You’re welcome, Darlene.

Wonderful photographs and write-up, Darlene. You’ve made my feet very itchy to return to Spain!

Thanks, Donna. There are so many little gems like this tucked away.

Fabulous as always, Darlene. Just curious, have you ever been to Tossa de Mar? I’m setting just a few scenes of my current urban fantasy there. Most of it takes place inside a fictional villa, though.

Tossa de Mar is North of Barcelona on the Costa Brava and we haven’t been there yet. What a cool place to set your story! If you have any questions about Spain or Spanish living, drop me a note.

Thanks, Darlene, I will 🙂

Looks blissful, Darlene. Fabulous door pics you got there.
I’ve just spent a few days in Torrevieja with some friends and I completely forgot to look out for unusual and beautiful doors. I got one! I’ll post it next Thursday. 😄

I live 10 minutes from Torrevieja! The next time you come, we must get together for a coffee. I’ll be interested to see the door you found while there.

No way!! That’s brilliant. Chances are, I’ll be back again because my friend recently bought an apartment there.
I’d love to meet with you, Darlene. 😃

Amazing photos, Darlene! I’d love to visit Spain someday. 💕

You would love it!. Glad you enjoyed these photos.

It looks a lovely place, Darlene. Love that little open door in the castle, beckoning me in…

It really was a nice place to spend some time. I like that door too.

You are so good at adventuring, Darlene! I just found and followed you on BlueSky!

That’s great!! Thanks. There is an adventure around every corner.

Looks like a wonderful place to spend time in Darlene. Lovely to read about. Those doors were pretty appealing too.

Thanks so much Jayne. There are so many cool places to visit in Spain. And I love the doors!

Love the door on the North African style castle! Wonderful geometry.

It is a great door! Even though every conqueror added their style to the castle, they kept some of the old stuff which I love.

Glorious stuff, Darlene! xx

Thank you, Terry. xo

Wonderful, great photos.

Thanks so much. Pleased you liked them!

A medieval castle in the middle of a city is wonderful! I love the many, different doors. What a great collection of photos, Darlene! Thank you for the tour.

Coming from North America, finding a castle in the middle of town still gives me a thrill! This was a very picturesque town.

Yes! It would give me a thrill, too. 😀

Thanks for sharing Darlene….love the architectural captures you took!! Looks like a great place to visit!! Have a great week!

Pleased you enjoyed these photos, Kirt. Every Spanish town is unique in its own way. Have a super week.

I love old doors and where better to find them than in a castle! The city looks lovely too, Darlene. I always enjoy studying the architecture and how it reflects the landscape as well as the culture. Lovely post.

I love the old doors in castles as well. I always think of all the people who have passed through them over the years. I’m so pleased you enjoyed this post, Diana.

Beautiful photos, Darlene. I’d love to have lunch at one of those cafes and then explore the town.

That’s what we did! We were there for a week so tried many different cafes and restaurants. I had paella three times!

Beautiful, Darlene – I love that castle

Me too. Imagine living in a place with a magical castle in the centre.

With 325 days of sunshine, Denia is my kind of place. Intriguing photos, Darlene.

Thanks Carol. My kind of place too. No wonder we decided to move to the coast of Spain. xo

Church and castle doors are always fascinating Darlene. I enjoy all your snapshots of Spain. ❤

Thanks, Debby! I too love church and castle doors.

Amazing photos of this beautiful Spanish town and love the church door! Nancy Andres @ Colors 4 Health.

Thanks so much for stopping in Nancy. I’m pleased you like these door photos.

I enjoyed your post and photos!

Thank you so much for visiting and commenting Robin. Glad you enjoyed the post.

Thank you for bringing back my memories of Spain. I loved the doors. And the constant sunshine! We average 330 days of clouds. Colorado and Spain have on average that many days of sun! Enjoy!

I’m pleased you enjoyed the pictures. We are very fortunate to have so much sunshine here.

Agree. When we get sun and blue skies, it is winter with snow and cold. I love my four seasons though. oxox

Beautiful pictures, Darlene!

Thank you so much, Marcia.

325 days! That’s a lot of sunshine! The pictures are beautiful.

We do get spoiled with sunshine here on the Costa Blanca. Lots of vitamin D.

That door that looks like a maze is super cool! Nice photos of a lovely city.

Denia and Altea are two of my favourite towns on the Costa Blanca. Thanks for commenting!

I can see why. They are both charming and both have a picturesque church with a blue dome.

I fell in love with Altea the first time we came to Spain!
