Thursday Doors: The Beatle’s Liverpool

Posted on: September 19, 2024

I have always wanted to visit Liverpool, the home of the Beatles. A few years ago, I had an opportunity when hubby decided to attend a reunion of his army regiment held in Liverpool! I was not disappointed and loved the city. Here are pictures of a few doors and buildings I enjoyed.

The Liver Building with the famous mythical liver birds on top. Legend has it that the city would cease to exist if the two birds were to fly away. The Cunard Building is beside it.

I took a ferry across the River Mersey (of course I had to) and got a great shot of the Liver Building, the Cunard Building, and the Port of Liverpool Building from the water.

But for me, it was all about the Beatles, and they were everywhere!

My first stop was the Beatles Story Exhibition. An excellent museum, located at the historic Royal Albert Dock, depicts the history of the Fab Four. Well worth a visit.

And a stop at the Cavern Club was a must.

The original entrance to the Cavern Club.

The names of the famous four are used liberally.

I didn’t have time to visit the houses Paul McCartney and John Lennon lived in as young boys. Perhaps next time. But I walked the streets they walked, visited locations they frequented, and places that inspired their work.

Oh yeah the Beatles. Thanks for this post Darlene.🥰

Thanks, Arlene. I’m so pleased you liked it. xo

Very nice one Darlene, thank you for sharing the Beatles places with us. I’m also one of the Beatles fan.

Thanks, Freddie. The Beatles defined our generation. My kids and grandkids like them as well. Talk about staying power.

The Beatles forever, surely one of the legendary band group.

I’d love to go there. I remember the television show called The Liver Birds back in the 70’s. I was only a child but I loved it. I loved their accents.
I actually didn’t know the story about two actual birds on that building. My history lesson of the day.

It is an exciting city with lots of museums and art galleries. And the Beatles of course!

It’s a great city! Did you get to see the shops in Liverpool ONE? Lovely photos, Darlene ❤️

I did a bit of shopping and stopped in at Waterstones and told them about my books. I believe Liverpool ONE is part of the pedestrian area on the way to the Albert Docks. It was very nice with high-end shops and quite modern. Glad you liked the photos. I have more from this fabulous city.

As you may have noticed, I’m a huge Beatles fan so it was great to see these photos of your trip to Liverpool. I’ve only ever been there once and that was for work, so I didn’t get the chance to look around. Mind you, that was in the early 80s so I don’t think a lot of what you saw was there then!

I knew you would enjoy this post, being a fellow Beatles fan. The docks have been cleaned up and are very nice with museums, art galleries and trendy restaurants and coffee shops. But the red brick buildings and old time ambiance are still there. I loved it.

I did enjoy it! Do you remember the Toxteth riots of, I think, 1981? We were there the Monday after that weekend. I don’t think we saw the city at its best!

Oh dear. I don’t believe it hit the news in Medicine Hat, Alberta. But if they were anything like the riots in LA, I imagine it was not a pretty site.

The aftermath of this is what we were stepping into!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1981_Toxteth_riots

Thanks for the info. I guess these problems were universal at the time. (or maybe still are)

There was a lot of it about at the time: Thatcher’s government was very divisive. Nowadays riots tend to be caused by the racist anti-immigrant mobs.

I tend to go through the posts in order, Darlene, but I saw your title and I couldn’t wait to get here. “I took a ferry across the River Mersey (of course I had to)” – I love that!

Great doors. Thanks for sharing, and I hope you have a great weekend.

I’m delighted you enjoyed my choice of doors for this week. It was exciting to cross the Mersey 55 years after enjoying the song by Gerry and The Pacemakers!

Such a memorable visit, Darlene, and I loved seeing the Beatles-infused photos!

Thanks, Dave. It was a visit I will always recall fondly. So pleased you enjoyed the post.

Glad the timing worked out and you were finally able to visit Liverpool. Beautiful set of doors. Sounds like a fabulous place to appreciate the Beatles too.

It was great timing and I had lots of time on my own to explore the city. As a huge Beatles fan, it was a dream come true.

I am so jealous once more of your travels.. Your visit took me right back to high school where the photo of George was proudly displayed in my locker.

I know what you mean. I had a picture of Paul hanging in mine! The funny thing is I married an English fellow named Paul twelve years later!!

I loved seeing this, especially the statues. That is so cool! 🌺

Thanks so much, Kymber. I love the statues and had my picture taken with them as well.

I think a trip to Liverpool for me would be all about the Beatles too, Darlene. What a fun place to visit and get a little nostalgic!

The city is very proud of their famous four! Many other great musicians came from Liverpool as well, Gerry Marsden, Cilla Black, and Billy J. Kramer. It was a walk down memory lane for sure.

From the looks of it, Liverpool has lots to see and do. Much nicer than I thought it would be.

I was pleasantly surprised. There were very nice museums and art galleries as well.

Love this! What a walk through history! I have never been to Liverpool but it sure seems worth a visit…thanks for sharing these great photos!

I really liked what I saw of Liverpool. I think it’s been cleaned up, especially the docks which are now very trendy but still the old buildings. I loved it.

Feels like a great side trip when in London next!

Great fun sharing of pics. Yes, next time is a great plan! Always travel like you’re going to return like Rick Steves says!!🩷🩷🩷

Thanks, Cindy. That is a good way to go as you can never see everything the first time. Mind you, I seldom return to a place as there are so many other places I want to see! But you never know where life will take you.

I agree and I do know. My spirit goes back but my age keeps me moving on lol 😂

What a super fun journey!! I love all these photos and the statues of The Beatles are awesome. Thank you for sharing, Darlene!

I’m glad you enjoyed this post, Jan. The statues are amazing and I have a picture of me standing with them as well.

hey Darlene, that is so awesome, that you visited the city that they were from! Glad you had a nice time!

It was awesome and a dream come true for me.

Thank you for another informative installment on DOORS. I probably knew the Beatles originated in Liverpool. Did you also know about author Beryl Bainbridge, who set many of her stories there?

Thanks, Marian. Glad you enjoyed these doors. I didn’t know of Beryl Bainbridge but will look her up.

I am green with envy, Darlene! I grew up with Beatles records always playing in our house. Dad was a huge fan who played guitar and sang their songs. ☺️

I know, I was very fortunate to get to visit the city of their birth and where they became famous. I watched the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show and screamed along with all the other teenage girls in the world!

Liverpool looks fantastic! Great post down memory lane with the Beatles, Darlene!

Thanks, Irene. Liverpool was a pleasant surprise. There will be more pictures to come.

Terrific doors, Darlene. I never realized Liverpool had such lovely buildings. Thanks for the tour.

Thanks, John. Liverpool has wonderful buildings. It was such a pleasure to wander around.

I’ve never been to Liverpool. Such interesting doors, Darlene.

Thanks, Esther. I plan to feature more in the coming weeks. It’s a fascinating place.

I’ll look forward to that 😊

Hi DArlene, how wonderful you got to fulfil a dream. I felt like that when I visited the Munch Museum in Oslo this year. Fabulous pictures.

Thanks, Robbie. It’s always good to be able to tick these things off the list, isn’t it. xo

I need to check this city out too! It looks really interesting, especially for Beatles fans.

You would love it! The museums and art galleries are great too and the main library is amazing.

Beatles forever

I agree! They certainly have staying power as my children and grandchildren enjoy them too.

Liverpool looks like a fun city to visit!

It really is. I would happily return.

It’s a grand city, isn’t it?

I loved it and to think so many left to start a new life in Canada from that very port.

Hi, Darlene – I first misread the name of the hotel to be ‘The Hangover Hotel.’ “Well, that’s getting right to the point” (I thought to myself) and I read again, properly the second time. Great photos! ❤

LOL. There may be folks who call it that. Glad you enjoyed the photos.

How fun, Darlene. That would be a dream visit for me too!

I was so very lucky I was able to visit this city. Sometimes things just work out!

I can not imagine how wonderful it would have been to explore Liverpool and the stomping ground of the Beatles! Wow. Seeing the sights and sounds that inspired their music. Love all the pics. Thank you so much for sharing. Someday…hugs, C

I never thought all those years ago, screaming with my friends at the Ed Sullivan Show on TV, that I would one day visit their home!

I don’t believe you’re old enough to remember that!

Wonderful, Darlene! A few years ago, I worked on a large project not far from what is now called ‘the Cavern Quarter’ and I was like a kid in a sweetshop whenever I could get the time. Mrs Britain and I toured the former Beatles’ homes and more besides – lots over on ABAB if you’re interested. It’s a vibrant city in any event and absolutely loads to see. The Cavern you visit now isn’t the original one, sadly – although a very good replica.

Thanks Mike. I’ll check out your visit to the homes. I was sorry to have missed that but there was only so much time. I loved the vibe of the city and to walk the streets of my childhood heroes was so awesome!!

Ahh! Sounds like a really fun trip. I have dreams of spending a whole summer in Europe with London as my base. Visiting all things British, including the British countryside! Someday soon🙂.
Pat

You would love it! There is so much to see and do in the UK. My favourite places besides London are York, Winchester and Liverpool. The countryside is amazing.

Thank you, from one BIG Beatles fan to another. I introduce my preschoolers to the Beatles with my old albums and record player, every year. They love it! The day they performed on Ed Sullivan was the first and only day I yelled at my parents to not say one word. I was glued. A friend told me about her visit to London in ’64 or ’65. She could have cared less about the Beatles (horror, I know) and was staying with a friend who was a huge Beatles fan. She suggested they go to the Cave, to see where the Beatles play. They went to check it out, and the Beatles were performing! She didn’t care at all, and she was there. I wanted to slap her, but I smiled and told her she was very lucky. Sigh! Thank you for the Liverpool tour, Darlene!

The Beatles defined our generation. I screamed at the TV along with my aunt and best friend during that Ed Sullivan show. Mom and Dad thought we were crazy. Years later, Mom admitted she thought The Beatles were very cute and actually liked their music. I can’t imagine anyone seeing the Beatles live and not getting excited. I thought you would enjoy this tour of Liverpool. xo

I’m smiling and nodding my head at everything you say. I feel the same way. We were there at the Ed Sullivan Show!!! Super Liverpool tour, Darlene.

Darlene, this was definitely a pilgrimage of sorts for you and I can sense you absolute joy in being at the heart of Beatle-land! Lovely photos and share about Liverpool. In spite of growing up in the North of England I have still never been there but definitely want to go sometime.

Thanks, Annika. This definitely was a dream come true for me. I hope you get there someday. The Walker Art Gallery is also worth a visit and the main library is to die for.

I’m sold! 😀 I better put aside a day for those two alone! Xx

Your visit must have been so exciting! Is The Cavern still an active nightclub?

It was an awesome visit. The Cavern is still an active nightclub but not in the exact same location as when the Beatles and others performed there. It is just next door and they have recreated it almost exactly as it was.

Thank you for the additional information, Darlene.

Fantastic, Darlene

Thanks, Toni. Have you been to Liverpool on one of your UK visits.

What a lovely tour around Liverpool. I so enjoy the music of the Beatles. My favorite photo is the one of the statues, walking along the sidewalk. 🙂

I love that one too. Such a great likeness of all of them. Thanks for visiting my blog and commenting.

What a fabulous trip, Darlene, and wonderful photos! I love the Beatle’s, so this tour would be so much fun. xo

It was a lot of fun. Liverpool is an amazing city with a great vibe. And they are very proud of the local lads who did well. Thanks, Lauren. xo

Thanks for sharing this fun post, Darlene. ❤

Thanks, Carol. It was fun to put together as it brought back some wonderful memories.

left my heart there 🫶
