Thursday Doors: Arran Revisited

Posted on: August 29, 2024

I have recently returned from another wonderful writer’s retreat on the Isle of Arran. Besides writing, talking about writing, attending writing-related workshops and eating cake, I went for refreshing walks and took pictures of the doors of some of the local businesses and houses. Most of these are in Whitting Bay close to where I stayed. I am now on a first-name basis with the shop owners.

A gentleman clearing out his house for downsizing is selling art he collected over the years in this pop-up shop.

Bay Wool & Crafts is my favourite shop where I buy many gifts to bring home. This year, Linda, the lovely woman looking after the shop, knit me an adorable tea cosy for my small Brown Betty. This shop is mentioned in Amanda in Scotland, where Amanda buys a tea cosy for her mom.

The local friendly post office also sells pet food, tinned goods and souvenirs. They are now displaying copies of Amanda in Scotland: The Standing Stones!

A local pub that is situated on the shore. Hence the name.

A fabulous local Art Gallery with many tempting items. So much talent on the island. I always buy at least some art cards.

The door to the Coast Discovery Centre which is also mentioned in Amanda in Scotland. The information about local sea life is amazing and they now have three fish tanks displaying incredible sea creatures.

A gorgeous home overlooking the bay.

One of many old churches on the island.

A wonderful old stone house by the church, most likely the manse where the clergy lived at one time.

I didn’t get the door to the Lamlesh Hotel but I love the Scottish Gaelic on the sign. I was pleased to learn that they teach Gaelic in the schools on the island. The reflection of the building across the street does have a door in it!

It was raining the day I dropped ten copies of Amanada in Scotland: The Standing Stones off at The Wee Bookstore. No picture of the door as it was around the corner and we were rushing to get in out of the rain. The store is very cosy inside and well-stocked. Of course, I bought a book.

Inside The Wee Bookstore with Tony the owner. The folks on the Ilse of Arran are so nice!

What a wonderful place! I can see why you love it!

It is so delightful and Amanda loved it too.

How lovely! I think the Wee Little Bookshop is my favorite. 😀

It is a darling little bookshop!

What a lovely retreat, Darlene. I love learning about the real places behind the settings in books and stories. Seeing these shops and learning about the people brings your book to life. Thanks for joining us at Thursday Doors and sharing these special places.

Thanks, Dan. I like it when you show photos of places mentioned in your books so thought I would follow suit. Now that I am back from my travels I can join in on Thursday doors again.

So glad to have you here!

Loved this! You are part of that area now.

Even though I only spend one week a year there, I feel like a local.

They have taken you in.

Enjoyed your photos, how fun to hand deliver your books! 💕

That was fun and nice to be given such a warm welcome too.

Lovely photos of a lovely place, with lovely people!

Thanks, Clive. It was wonderful.

Love the Wee Bookshop sign, Darlene!

Me too. Whimsical just like the shop itself.

Hi Darlene, this sounds wonderful. I loved Scotland.

I know. It is such a wonderful place. I need to see more of it.

Combining the doors theme with a wonderful tour putting those doors in context

Thanks, Derrick. Glad you enjoyed the tour.

It all looks enchanting, including the doors. I’d love to be in weather that would require a jacket, a nice reprieve from Florida heat. 😀

It was a welcome reprieve from the Spanish heat I can tell you.

Loved doors–not like our hollow-core white-painted ones!

The doors in European countries are very interesting for the most part. Glad you liked these.

That is a lot of beautiful photos. Before this post I had never heard of the island of Arran. I had to look it up on google maps. Of course you bought a book. I would have done the same.

Yes, and it was a dog book too!

That is great, and I would probably have bought the same book.

It is so cute. There were a number of dog books. In fact there is even a bookshop dog!

A super array of doors! Though the best has to be the wee bookshop!

I agree. Such a cute place. There is even a bookshop dog!

Wow! That’s amazing 🐶

Lovely photos, Darlene. The Isle looks very inviting.

It certainly is. I am so lucky to get to go there!

I loved the time I spent in Scotland back in 2018.

The photo of you outside the Wee Bookstore is fabulous! Happy Scottish adventuring Amanda. : )

I love, love, love these photos!! So blessed, my dear!

Thanks, Jan. I truly am blessed.

It’s a special place for a writer’s retreat, Darlene. I have friends touring Arran at the moment and I’ve seen some fine photos.

It’s a great place for hiking and exploring ancient sites. I’m sure they are loving it.

They are! They have been revisiting places they loved from many years ago because the husband now has health issues.

Lovely post!!! I love that bookshop photo!

It is such a wonderful bookshop and I’m so proud that my books are in it!

Looks like a charming place to visit!

It is and I find something new to see and do every time.

This is an awesome write-up, Darlene. You’ve made me want to visit the Isle of Arran without delay! 😀

Thanks, Donna. It is a charming island and worth a visit.

I live happily in a village like that, especially in that gorgeous home!

It reminds me a bit of Ladner. So you would be happy there. xo

Scotland and the Isles are so beautiful! Thanks for posting. Pleased you visited the bookshop,

Thanks. I love everything about Scotland! The bookshop visit was special and wonderful that he is stocking my book.

Lovely set of pictures. It’s neat to hear how some of these places and experiences have made their way into Amanda in Scotland, like Bay Wool & Crafts.

Thanks so much. I love to include some local places in my books if I can.

I love the look of that old clergyman’s house. Such a lovely place by what I can see.

It does look cosy. Sadly the churches are no longer used as churches anymore and the house hasn’t been lived in for some time.

What a wonderful adventure, Darlene. I could smell the fresh sea air through the WIFI!!!

It was indeed wonderful, Rebecca. That fresh sea air early in the morning was so refreshing!

And you ate cake, too. I love it!

It looks like an absolutely gorgeous area!

Oh yes, plenty of cake and other deliciuos things.

Oh what a lovely book retreat and wonderful shops culminating with your great book traveling.. Great pics, Darlene💕

Thanks, Cindy. It is a perfect place for a writers retreat. xo

Darlene, this is delightful! I love the shops and doors. I hope you keep in touch with Tony. Besides the Wee Bookstore, the tall tower on the church, the big stone home, and even Gaelic written on the sign are my faves.

I’m not surprised at your favourites. Tony and I plan to keep in touch. xo

THis is charming! I have to google it tho as I’ve never heard of it! #Seniorsalonpitstop

Thanks for stopping in, Lydia. There are many wonderful Scottish islands. I love this one!

Darlene, this is a really interesting post. I love the doors and the snippets you wrote about the places.

Visiting today from SSPS 326 #86,87,88&89

Thanks for stopping in Paula!. Glad you enjoyed the post.

What a lovely trip and you’ve become so well-known!

Thanks, Toni. After four years of visiting the island, folks are recognizing me. It’s like that on small islands.

Fantastic door post!! It’s so much fun when an author immortalizes one’s town as the setting for a book.

Thanks, Liz. Glad you like it. I think the folks on Arran Island are pleased to see familiar places in a story.

You’re welcome, Darlene.
