Thursday Doors: Doors of Rural Ireland

Posted on: June 29, 2023

Welcome to Thursday Doors! This is a weekly challenge for people who love doors and architecture to come together to admire and share their favourite door photos, drawings, or other images or stories from around the world. If you’d like to join us, simply create your own Thursday Doors post each (or any) week and then share a link to your post in the comments below, anytime between 12:01 am Thursday morning and Saturday noon (North American Eastern time). Here is the link to Dan’s post for this week if you would like to join us. https://nofacilities.com/2023/06/29/independence-doors/

I found amazing doors travelling around the Irish countryside.

Here are a few samples:

A door to Powerscourt, a country estate in Enniskerry, County Wicklow,

The front of Powerscourt Estate

A hidden door I discovered at the 12th Century Kilkenny Castle in the middle of the medieval market town of Kilkenny.

Castle Kilkenny

A delightful country cottage with a bright red door.

The door to Durrow Castle. What was once a castle, later a school and now a prestigious hotel where destination weddings are often held.

The door to a welcoming pub filled with history.

The door to a no longer used parochial house, which is up for sale by the way.

Some nice stained glass above the windows of the parochial house.

There will be more about these places but I thought you might enjoy a sample.

Thanks, Dan for the opportunity to showcase doors we have discovered.

I expected to see more bright colors like the red on the cottage door. When we visited Ireland, house paint colors were brilliant: green, yellow, orange, blue–and of course, red!

Being the history buff I am, I focused on the castles and churches more than the individual houses. But there were colourful doors like the red one shown. I just didn’t take as many pictures of them. xo

glad you had fun in Ireland Darlene!
I’ve not been to Kilkenny!
I havent been to Wicklow either!

Isn’t that always the way! I loved every part of Ireland I visited. I stayed with friends in Portlaoise so explored the are nearby.

It’s funny how a simple door makes you want to enter that world. Nicely selected, Darlene.

Thanks, Jacqui! I agree, an appealing door just invites you in.

Great variety Darlene! Sign me up for door number 6. I’ve never lived in a castle. Love it! ❣️💞💞

It was wonderful inside too. The cool thing was that my friend attended school there and it brought back fond memories for her. We also met a family from the US getting ready for a wedding the next day. Their roots are from the area so the bride thought it would make a great location for her wedding.

Oh wow, I bet it was. How cool is that. What a wonderful experience to share! 💞💞

Thanks for sharing these, Darlene. The door to Powerscourt is amazing! I love doors within doors. The estate is huge. Can you imagine living there? I love seeing castles and all their interesting feautre, like that hidden door. The corner door is very nice, but I really like the little cottage doors and Bob’s Bar.

I thought you would like these doors, Dan. A nice mix from a huge estate house, a couple of castles and a farm house. Bob’s Bar looked so inviting I had to get a photo, even though we didn’t have time to stop in.

These are great doors, Darlene

Fabulous photos, Darlene! Thank you for sharing!

You will soon be seeing similar sights!!

Ireland and Scotland are two places I would love to visit. I love the cottage with the red doors. Reminds me of John Wayne’s character’s cottage in “The Quiet Man”, one of my favorite movies.

I love both places very much and so would you. That cottage was so adorable I had to take a picture.

I’ve never paid much attention to the doors but this challenge sounds interesting! Thanks for sharing so much of history Darlene.

Thanks, Balroop. I am always on the lookout for interesting doors when I travel. This is a fun challenge.

You found some great doors.

Thanks. I did manage to find some good ones. Of course there were many more but I didn’t always think to take a picture.

Hi Darlene, some impressive doors. The parsonage looks rather plain and unappealing to me.

Thanks, Robbie. It was a parsonage after all. But it does have some nice stained glass over the windows in another picture (that doesn’t show the door) I called it a nice little fixer upper!! It was also on a nice bit of property with a large garden. I think the right person could make it very cosy.

Ah, yes, those windows are lovely

I’ve added the picture of the window with the stained glass.

Terrific doors, Darlene. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, John. Glad you liked them.

Great pictures, Darlene. I love the little stained glass windows at the end.

They are very sweet and added something to an otherwise plain house. Thanks for your comments, Vera.

I do like hidden doors!

Me too! The imagination goes into overdrive.

A door within a door is always a winner in my book as is a red door.

janet

Thanks, Janet. I love those big doors with a smaller door. I believe one is for people, the other for horse and carriages.

These are a nice variety, Darlene, but I have to say I’m partial to the bright red one. So charming.

That red door really caught my eye.

Your doors are gorgeous, Darlene. They make me want to teleport myself to Rural Ireland right now! 😀

Thanks, Donna. Glad you enjoyed these doors. xo

I love the hidden door at Kilkenny Castle. The mystery writer in me thinks of many possibilities for a story there. 🙂

I’m sure there are many stories that could be created around that hidden door!

Wonderful doors, Darlene. Red doors are always inviting, and so are castle doors. I hope you stopped at Bob’s Bar for a drink.🙂

There is something about a red door, isn’t there? Sadly we didn’t have time for a drink but we took the time to drive by and take a picture. Maybe next time.

Yes, there is. And there’s always a next time. Best to you, Darlene.

I wonder where that little hidden door at Kilkenny Castle leads to?

I enjoyed these from Ireland, Darlene:)

Glad you like these, Denise.

What a beautiful collection of door pictures. I can’t help but wonder where they lead to.

That’s the thing about doors, you always wonder what’s behind them and what secrets they hold. So pleased you liked this collection.

A great selection, Darlene. The country cottage with the bright red door is adorable.

Thanks, Lauren! The white cottage with the red door seems to be very popular.

Awesome selection of doors! I love the one with all the iron studs. It almost makes it look like diamond patterns. Imagine all the work that it took just to make the studs! Thanks for checking our my Ireland doors too!

I just went to Ireland last month, and I could have taken pictures of doors all day long. My favorites were the ones with the doorknobs in the middle. Visiting from Senior Salon Pit Stop.

Isn’t Ireland great!! I too loved all the many and varied doors. Thanks for stopping in.

I remember some of those doors from our trip a couple of years ago. Nice pictures!

Pleased they brought back some good memories for you. Ireland is an amazing place to visit. Thanks for stoping by and commenting.

Just beautiful, Darlene

I like the cottage with the red door.

Beautiful doors, Darlene. The secret door in Kilkenny castle looks intriguing. Durrows castle looks gorgeous from whatever little can be seen in the photo and Bob’s bar looks like a cozy place. Looking forward to seeing more of Ireland through your eyes.

Thanks. More to come very soon!

Looking forward to it🙂
