“Marilla, isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?”
LM Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables
That is how I always feel on New Year’s Day. A new year with no mistakes yet! I am always so excited to make a list of goals, not all of them new, some are brought over from the year before as they didn’t get met. And that’s OK. Some have been on the list for a few years already. Things happen when they are supposed to.
Here is my list for 2023
- Read Mom’s five-year diary by reading one page a day. It will be great to learn more about Mom as a teenager.
2. Finish Amanda in Scotland: The Standing Stones, book number ten in the Amanda Travels series.
3. Publish my collection of short stories based on my childhood growing up on the Canadian prairies.
4. Learn how to self-publish
5. Return to Canada and attend a family reunion
6. Create a newsletter.
7. Clean up and sort out my office.
8. Clean up my computer and tablet
9. Read and write more poetry
10. Eat out more often. Since the pandemic, we have gotten out of the habit and I’m getting tired of cooking all the time.
11. Read 48 books. I’m going to try for this reading goal again.
12. Work on reducing my TBR pile on my bookshelves and on my Kindle
13. Maintain my health; reduce my sugar intake
14. Visit Ireland
15. Continue marketing my books and looking for new ways to market
That should keep me busy enough so I don’t get bored.
My words for 2023 are Savour the Moment
Wishing everyone a super 2023: May many of your dreams come true!

There’s much to comment on here, but I’ll zero in on just one: your mother’s diary, which equates in vintage to my aunt’s teenage diary. I began 2022 imagining I would build a book from just that. As it turned out, snippets of her diary are just a small part of My Checkered Life.
I look forward to Amanda in Scotland, Darlene! 🙂

I thought of your Aunt Ruthie’s diary when I was given my mom’s. I’m sure there will be some great material in this one too.

Great goals, Darlene – I’m intrigued by your mother’s diary. I would have a hard time reading just one page a day. We share a goal for 2023 – less sugar! Here’s to a productive and healthy new year 🙂

I know. One page a day might be hard but we’ll see how I do. It will be great to think, that’s what mom was doing and thinking on this day 80 years ago.

Yes, it’s a wonderful idea. I’d be so curious I might not be able to help myself. How nice that you have her journal 🙂

Exciting list, Darlene, and I hope you get to tick them all off this year. I’m looking forward to those short stories. And what a treasure that diary is!

Darlene

The diary is indeed a treasure. January 2, 1943 entry. “Broke my New Year’s resolution.” I think I will be getting a laugh out of my 14-year-old mother’s scribbles.

Such an interesting list of goals! For me, there are some truly unique things ahead, some not sharable yet, but my overall goal is to support all of my friends and family in their endeavors while staying creatively stimulated with my own! Happy New Year!

Darlene
January 4, 2023 at 2:25 am
You will have no trouble with that as you are already very good at supporting others. I wish you all the best with any new endeavours! Can’t wait to hear all about them. Happy New Year!!

Nothing wrong with armchair travel. One of the reasons I started to write the series, so others can travel to these places without leaving home. xo

Your 2023 goals are impressive. The most difficult for me would be to clean up my computer. Good luck with all your goals and your reading list. ❤

That is a difficult one and has been on the list for a couple of years. I just need to do it!

Hi, Darlene. Wow! You have a high level list there, good for you!
I would like to travel but I figure I’m saving money and can buy books to read about others people’s experiences – fact or fiction.
As for diaries, my mum wrote for parts of years, and I destroyed my own so no one else could read them. 🙂 Let the illusion live on.
Have a super productive and creative years, Darlene!

I am enjoying reading my mom’s diary. Funny the words that were used at that time. But girls are always girls no matter what. I have journals that my kids may or may not enjoy reading some day!

That’s quite a big list Darlene. You will be quite busy, let alone jumping into self-publishing. But the fun will be reading your mom’s diary! Happy 2023! ❤

A lovely ‘To do’ list. I hope you can achieve all or most of them, at least. 4,11, 12, 13, and 15 are my goals, too, for the year.
Btw, I just started reading Amanda in Arabia, and I’m enjoying it . I hope to read the rest in the series, too. All the best for the new book. Your mom’s diary sounds exciting.
