Take Your Child to A Bookstore Day

Posted on: November 22, 2011

December 3 is Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day across North America. This day was created to encourage parents to take their children to a local bookstore and discover the delights of books and reading. Do you remember the first time you entered a book store? The smell of the freshly printed books, the friendly staff, the bright colours of the book covers and the ability to escape into other worlds, sticks with us forever.

“Bookstores hold a place in the hearts and times of our community. They are places to discover an author, a story, a life. Nothing affords the conversation and interaction among books and book lovers that a bookstore does. On December 3rd, 2011, take the child in your life to a bookstore. Watch his face light up as you give him free access, not just to a new book, but to tomorrow.”—Jenny Milchman, creator of Take Your Child to a Bookstore.

I will be participating in this event at Black Bond Books in Ladner where there will be a colouring contest, story reading time, a draw for a gift card and other fun activities. I will be available to read from my books and answer questions.

If you have kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews or neighbours’ kids, please mark December 3 on your calendar and take them to the bookstore of your choice. It may prove to be a great experience for you as well! Try to keep in mind that indie bookstores can use the business right now, more than ever. Spread the word about Take Your Child to a Book Store.

My daughter’s 35, but I know she’d love to go! 🙂 As would I…we love bookstores.

My daughter is 36 and she would still love to go. It really is for kids of all ages!!

I hadn’t heard of this, Darlene. What a wonderful idea. Kids should be exposed to books and bookstores at an early age.

I know you’ll have a fabulous time participating. I’ll be thinking of you, and hoping that you will let us all know how it went. 🙂

Anyone can participate. You can always print the poster off the website and take it to your local bookstore to hang in the window.

I will have fun and plan to share the experience. Thanks Laura.

Thanks, Darlene, for the wonderful post, and Laura, for your enthusiasm. Patti, I think you’re right–Take Your Child to a Bookstore Day is for kids 1 day to 101 years!

A timely post. There was a news item in our local newspapaer reporting on a study. It stated that all a parent has to do to help ensure their child does well in school and in life is to read to them every day. How simple is that!

So true, it is the best gift one can give a child. My kids always comment on no matter how busy I was, I always read to them. Better than plunking them in front of a TV that’s for sure.

If I had a kid, I’d take them to a bookstore every day.

They would be very luckykids indeed Steven.
