Busy with Writing Stuff

Posted on: October 4, 2011

I have been busy lately, not so much with writing, which I should be doing, but with writing related stuff. It’s all good stuff mind you.

Local authors Darlene Foster, Bob MacKay, Duane Duff

I was invited, along with a number of other writers, to attend the opening of the new Surrey Centre City Library. We were introduced as local writers and our books were on display. It was an honour to be part of this special event. The new library is amazing, designed as a meeting place for those who love books and culture. The place was a hive of activity with plenty of entertainment for all.

I also attended Word on The Street at the Vancouver Public Library and helped staff the Federation of BC Writers table for one hour and the CWILL table for another hour. The weather was not ideal and we had to find another spot for the CWILL table as the tents on Literacy Lane were all blown over by the wind and rain storm. Never-the-less, we had a good time and met many interesting writers and readers. I was able to listen to a couple of writers read from their work and pick up some Christmas presents. I am known as the “Book Grandma” and don’t want to disappoint.

The other project I have been busy with is a local children’s writing contest. I was asked to be a judge for the summer long contest. Over 65 entries were submitted for the two categories, 10 – 13 years and 14 – 17 years. I was amazed at the quality of writing and the creative ideas these young people produced. One story made me cry. That’s powerful stuff. I am afraid there is some wicked competition coming along folks. The winners will be announced on Friday.

I have done a bit of research for Amanda in England. A kind writer sent me some great pictures and information on Hampton Court so I can’t wait to get started on that chapter. I also went on a sailboat ride to gather information for an earlier chapter. Research can be tough.

In case you are wondering, I still have my full-time day job and do manage to spend some time with my understanding and patient hubby.

Are you busy with writing stuff? Do you wish you had more time to write or is it good to get out and do other things?

Your post made me smile. I’m so happy for you. What fun, taking part in writerly things. All these little extras makes our journey all the sweeter. 🙂

Glad I made you smile Laura. Yes, these things mean a lot.

I think we need to get out more, so we have more to write about. Fill the well, then the words will flow from it. Looks like you were having a lot of fun!

I am having fun. I don’t think I would get many ideas if I just stayed at home in front of my computer all day. Thanks Patti!

Hi Darlene,

I think it is important to be involved with life, and that is what you do. You are a fine example for me.

What an amazing looking library. Calgary is planning on a new downtown library. I hope they hire the same archiyect.
Vancouver has a richness in terms of the writing community. Never a weekend goes by and there isn’t something on related to writing.

It is an amazing library designed by Bing Thom, an award winning architect. I am truly lucky to be living in a community that respects and encourages the arts. Every day I am thankful I made the decision to live in Vancouver.
